I am sorry sir, but your post is short-sighted and biased. QlickView has its place, and so does Cognos. Your post however only blows the horn of Qlickview, and actually forgets to mention the places where Cognos has the advantage. Not to mention the errors e.g. In Cognos you can actually drill down into transactional level data, or drill-through. The report writer has the option to turn aggregation on or off.

ReplyDeleteI am happy to see your view but if you look at havy data size report and once you try to get more that 7 dimentional report in Cognos/OLAP its is not practical to give detail. Most of time you need to go with aggregation but yes drill down is possible in cognos but going to transactinal data is something thatis not very much easy with all kind of analysys, and what happen if you have a new requirment with a new set of data ( Dimention) in OLAP??/
The answer is you need to make changes in cubes where most of user come out of budget. one of user of Qlikview in insurance sector has dicided to replace all cognoss licences by QlikView due to only this region that once new requirment come it is diificult to manage so cost of maintainence is also to high in comparision to Qlikview. Being an in-memory solution QlikView is getting lot of attention and now its fastest growing BI tool. I will soon give you a functional comparision with OLAP and QlikView in this blog. Hope I am able to explain QlikView if you have any query I request you to write me on this blog.

ReplyDeleteThere is some good news for Qlikview. Gartner has come out with its famous Magic Quadrant Report for BI 2009. There are some concerns as well which Qlikview needs to address. I am also writing a small article on this, which you may like to read.

Sudhir- Its good to see that you are taking efforts to gather information and making it available for public. That's really a noble cause. But people coming to read our blog are our Guests and you should be ready to accept any criticism that may come from time to time. Our aim should be learn from such remarks and try to come up with our readers expectations. We should try to be more polite while replying back to such comments and should take them in a positive and constructive fashion.
One more thing I would like to say is these yes-no comparisons are good but if we can provide detailed insight into some of the points if not all, would be beneficial.

comparison.
I'll detail some of the points that I disagree with below:
A Product
1. Why publish QlikView's marketing spiel here rather than just stating the
product name? You come across as a QlikView 'fanboy' and lower
the reader's expectation of a balanced review. Incidentally, what does
QlikView define a 'customer' as? A unique sales account, or simply
a license? I don't believe that QlikView has ever quantified this.
2. Again, Why mention the marketing spiel? Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is
mentioned without any quantification. Can it really deliver a solution
in a quarter of the time? Where's the published and *independent*
evidence of this?
C. Applications (What happened to category B?)
Your view of QlikView as a replacement for all these tools is as simplistic
as it is misleading. You could equally argue that Excel beats Cognos
under your conditions since all these things are possible in a spreadsheet.
Yes, QlikView can produce elements of all these BI and Performance
Management applications, but would you really consider QlikView's script as
a legitimate competitor against Cognos's Data Manager ETL tool?
I totally agree that end user training takes hours rather than days, but
when you consider training for scripting and 'high-end' functionality
(ragged hierarchies, performance tuning, etc.) in QlikView - the training
takes longer (1-2 days I believe is the training time from Qliktech?)
D Hardware and Licenses
1. I think you're trying to say that for Cognos to run it is either
optional or mandatory to query via a [data] warehouse? Cognos is database
independent, and fully supports access to just about all of the popular
RDBMS flavours as well as connection to many other types of data.
Do you truly believe that QlikView does not require a database? You must
work in a truly remarkable information environment. I have no doubt that a
systems architect (to say nothing of your enterprise architect) would have
fits if you told him you were going to wilfully create data silos outside
of the main database/data warehousing environment. QlikView is *excellent*
at associated data from multiple sources, but I would strongly recommend to
any readers that this is backed up by a 'single source of truth' (be it a
standardised operational system, data warehouse or conformed data marts).
What happens if your QVD/QVW files become corrupt? Will you ever need to
rebuild from an enterprise source of data?
2/3. Cognos offers a multitude of license options. You are being far too
simplistic here.
4. How can Cognos offer unlimited Web Users yet require named User
Licenses?
5. Again, you've resorted to meaningless marketing drivel rather than a
balanced comparison. Cognos uses an RDBMS as its primary metadata and
security repository.
E Technology
1. Kinda dull comparison, isn't it?
3. This is just wrong. QlikView has a macro language that can be configured
in either VBScript or JavaScript. Its API can also be called from Visual
Basic (and possibly more) through Object Libraries. Cognos is a
service-orientated architecture (SOA) and as such can be called through Web
Services/SOAP as well as via .NET/Java/etc.
4. Cognos ReportNet is the *OLD* name for the entire Cognos BI suite
(Cognos v7 ReportNet) - you've misunderstood the tools here. There are
different report studios for different functions
(Query/Analysis/Reporting/Metrics/Events) all synchronised against a
standard validated metadata source. You argue that QlikView doesn't require
a third party tool. I would argue 'neither does Cognos'.
5. Again, your information is fundamentally flawed and out of date.
Decision Stream is Cognos v7's ETL engine, replaced by Data Manager in
Cognos 8. I wouldn't let most of my customers *near* the scripting engine
in QlikView (and evidently, neither would QlikView, since this is only
accessible by their Developer license, and somewhat via their Professional
license in v8.5) - you really want your end users running poor SQL against
your production data warehouse?
6. Again, out of date. Cognos uses either Powerplay Transformer to build
MOLAP cubes or DMR (Dimensional-Relational?) modelling inside its metadata
tool (Framework Manager) to provide cube functionality to the end users.
Can you elaborate on how QlikView or Cognos support 'all major OLAP cubes'?
7/8/9 'BY MEANS OF THE GLOBAL/WORLD STANDARD ODBC CONNECTIONS' - you mean,
'the developer has to do all the work himself'
F FEATURES
9. Time trending - why make the distinction that QlikView can trend over
'as many years as the database holds'? Are you saying Cognos can't do this?
28. I love the fact that a french version of Cognos is apparently
available. Indeed, Cognos has a very extensive UNICODE language capability
in place (and has since v7 ReportNet)
33. I'd argue that QlikView does have OLAP functionality. Online Analytical
Processing....that's QlikView to a tee. Let's use the Wikipedia definition
of OLAP ('an approach to quickly answer multi-dimensional analytical
queries.') Bingo.
62. What's the point of saying technology is a feature? What are you asking
here?
69. After using QlikView for two and a half years, I'd say that its report
writing capability is 'weak, but improving'.
82 onwards - did you just give up on the Cognos comparison at this point,
and start reeling off QlikView marketing spiel again?
All of the values you provide in the bright green section at the bottom are
unfounded and meaningless. I suggest you either examine some non-vendor
literature (if any exists) and rework these numbers appropriately. Note:
Gartner/Aberdeen etc. to my knowledge do not have figures this specific.
All in all - I'd like to commend your effort to systematically review the
components of each BI tool. However, since you have posted in a public
space I need to respond and disagree publically with most of your
conclusions (which come across as marketing waffle).
I have worked in BI for ten years (never for a BI vendor, but often as a BI
purchasor for large companies) and have used a broad spectrum of toolsets
(Business Objects 5/6/XIr2, Actuate, SAS, Cognos 7/8 and QlikView) and
currently spend a disproportionate amount of my time working with QlikView
and some very happy end users. I would tend to agree that QlikView is a
great analysis and prototyping tool, but tend to think that it steers IT
down the route of 'workgroup BI' rather than really tackling the problems
of enterprise-wide data integration and delivery.

SIB is a process developed by QlikTech to help our end users/Customers to evaluate QlikView. Ask your vendor to help you to evaluate QlikView. Work on it then know it otherwise you will always blame my each post Biased one.

I am also thinkig of writing some thing about Hyperion and OBIEE but it require lot of study and now days I am bit bussy with closures.

If you want to know how crap it is - go to the qlikview development forums and see the suffering for yourself. There are many critical things that simply cannot be done, and worse, critical issues with deployments that can't be fixed.
If you must try in-memory analysis use PowerPivot - it's free and better.
my 2 cents: the big problem for BI solutions is the DATA (availability, quality, etc) NOT the frontend app... give me a good Database (want to call it data warehouse? ok...) and qlikview, cognos, BO, microstrategy, ecc... will make easy and good dashboard and reports... that's all, the rest (imho) are bullshits...
