QlikView vs. SAS

Dear Readers,

In past few weeks I saw some good marketing/Sales activities from SAS, even in some cases they were in competition with me. My prospects were asking for comparison between QlikView and SAS then I decided to share that comparison with you.

Apart from the detailed comparison bellow in my view SAS have some excellent capabilities when it come to data mining, OR and Quality Improvement, and Data Quality (By using data flux). QlikView also cover these parts but not in the way how SAS do. Instead being a good tool SAS requires a good budget also for cost of ownership as well as for cot of maintenance. Also it is not very much helpful when it come to ad-hock reporting and it is not very much helpful to End-user( Top Bosses) and become an IT tool only.

I love to see you view on my article.

  1. One of My Reader Ronald have putted some comments on this article at www.linkedin.com where I highlight some parts of my blog. Below are his Question and my answer
    Sudhir,

I never said I have anything against QlikView as a product - as a Business Intelligence tool. In fact - given the right requirements, QlikView is extremely powerful.

I do have something against this type of pseudo-objective-writings that are really just advertisements.

But your remark about DWH and next generation BI tools is interesting. Are you saying that Qlikview replaces all DWH and ETL functionality?

    Dear Ronald,
I love to discuss at my blog only as it is readable by everyone who visit my page.
If you look at QlikView architecture its not required to create a data warehouse as any how it is pulling data and storing it in QVW files which have GUI also and it is single layer architecture. So if we pull data either from raw table (Transaction System/Data base) or from Data warehouse it makes no difference as you are pulling required field/dimension and it is being stored in QVW file as its native way. I saw different software companies who propose QlikView as a front end tool that will be pulling data from Data warehouse. It is just to stretch the project so they can make more money on services as QlikView take very less time to implement hence it is not giving much profits to vendors as compared to traditional BI Software to earn from QlikView is only way do rapid sales. Show ROI to customer in short time, Get repeat order implement fast and make it customers success and set example for next prospect.
If you look at ETL functionality QlikView’s edit script is sufficient enough in my view.
Sorry to say but it is not an advertisement I am not employee of QlikTech. I am a sales guy who sales QlikView also apart from Navision and Actionbase kind of tool.

Do you even know what SAS is? and What DataWarehousing is?

No warehouse? No ETL? No cubes? ....just sounds funny....
    -----------------------------------------

I'd like to know where the 38% success rate for OLAP implementations comes from that Sudhir volunteers up on the BO comparison. (although I could easily believe it.)

Thanks Ronald for taking on this conversation against what is of course another dubious advertisement. Great phrase - "symbol for declining rigor". :)

Does anybody know of any legit comparison or whitepapers on different BI products? I'd love to see something that looks at BO, Merced and also warehouse implementations for such like Datallegro. (All used at Dell)
    ------------------------------------------------
Yes Mitch no warehouse, no third party ETL, no cubes.. Its not a fun its next generation BI, its revolution in Technology.. I suggest you to download QlikVIew spend time with tutorial or ask any near by vendor for SIB ( Seeing is Beliving) see some exaplme on your own data get feel of QlikView then do you fun...

Hardly an unbiased analysis of the functionality of Qlikview and other offerings!

Inconsistencies from one comparison to the next and an apparent lack of real understanding of the product offerings

Having used both SAS and BO for a number of years, Qlikview is simply not at the races - probably fine for most of the elementary stuff but not for complex or regulated environments. A dangerous tool in the wrong hands and worrying that users would only need a few hours training!!

I agree with Bobby, the comparison is absurd. If Qlikview really wants to be a player, it needs to stop with the marketing hype and unsubstantiated claims (half of the TCO, twice the value, 1/4 development time etc.) and provide an actual blueprint on how the product can be realistically rolled out within an organization.

I do agree with Bobby & Ralph, QlikView is just a Glorified Reporting tool, nothing else. If you need to analyse huge set of data, qlikview will just break down. In view Qlikview is better than Excel reporting or crystal reports or Discoverer but much weaker than SAS, Cognos, BO, Microstartegy.

Ok, the comparison are correct but most of the time not relevant.

QV has its place and SAS has its place. You can do everything you need with SAS, not sure that applies to QV. There needs to be hand-holding before QV works with the data. SAS pretty much can start right away working with the data. A SAS user can do the data cleaning while you need IT folks to clean the data with QV. An yes, once the data is clean and nicely package in QV, anyone can use it very easily and very fast.

So I would have preferred a comparison of the tool focusing on how they complement each other or where they overlap.

By the way most folks that use SAS don't think of themselves as IT folks.

    Good day Gentlemen,
    ==============================================
I know we're stating the obvious here, but any tool is dangerous if you don't have a proper architecture outline and data model. We've been at the race for quite some time now and provide tremendous value for our customers (we're not for everyone, but I haven't witnessed a product or solution that meets every IT or Business Users needs yet).

Sushant, I think a few of us are missing the boat on stating that QlikView is a "glorified reporting tool". I'm biased, which I wish some people would have stated on this string, but I would put our analytical engine against any tool for "Analytical Requirements" (bake offs are fun for us). To state glorified reporting tool in this string really undermines how our users achieve business answers every day!

Ralph, We provide blueprints to our customers every day depending on what your definition of blueprint is?

    Good luck Gentlemen

    Best Regards,

  10. Dear Readers,
I just logged in to my blog to put a new post.. Then I decided to review lot of comments at different platforms, Including lnkedin.com and some strings that Ronald has putted in above comment.
I found that many of them have worked on traditional BI platefrms and very few of them have worked on QlikView (Like Ron.. He has left his comments on QlikView VS BO and on QlikView Vs SAS also.)

I am not able to understand if my post is just another post and if my comparisons are just another comparison why these So called Data Warehouse experts are pointing all the guns towards me.. Why this all hue and cry..

Guys to know about QlikView- World’s fastest Growing BI software ( Look at some big analyst ports) which is the only champion on Aberdeens BI Performance Management Axis (QlikTech got 94 Scores where Hyperion got 90 Microsoft BI got 88 others are at less than 88 Score) the only way is SIB-- Seeing is believing... Ask your vendor to help you to evaluate QlikView on your own data.

    All the best..

  14. Sudhir, you have done a good job at comparing QlikView and SAS, and one can really appreciate the hard work gone in there.

I would want to add the following:
SAS is most used for statistical modeling - to derive a model (and its coefficients) using a data set. Once developed, this model can be visualized using standard dashboards, etc. The model generation feature isn't available in QV (as yet) and that is where the key difference lies.

    ReplyDelete
  15. so what can SAS do that QV cannot in relation to consumer lending?
    OR
What can QV do that SAS cannot?
